🪰 Bug of the Week Challenge: Fantastic Flies

May 16 – May 22

This week, we’re taking a closer look at one of the most misunderstood insects around… flies!

They may seem annoying at times, but flies play an important role in nature. Some help pollinate flowers, break down waste, and even serve as food for birds, frogs, and spiders. This week’s activity is all about slowing down, observing, and discovering the tiny, fast-moving world right outside your door.

🔍 This Week’s Challenge: Fly Watchers Head outside and see how many different flies you can find!

đź‘€ Observe a Fly Look in places like:

  • Flowers

  • Trash cans or compost bins

  • Parks and grassy areas

  • Windows or porches

  • Puddles after rain

Encourage your child to watch quietly for a few minutes and really focus.

✏️ Look Closely & Ask Questions Help your child think like a scientist:

  • What color is the fly?

  • How fast does it move?

  • Does it land often or keep flying?

  • What might it be looking for?

  • Can you hear it buzzing?

🎨 Draw What You SeeTry a creative follow-up:

  • Sketch a fly

  • Draw its wings up close

  • Invent a “super fly” with silly colors or powers

  • Create a comic about a fly on an adventure

🧪 Optional Mini ExperimentPlace a small piece of fruit outside and observe from a distance:

  • Do flies visit?

  • How long does it take?

  • What do they do when they land?

(Be sure to supervise and clean up afterward.)

🧠 Think Like a ScientistAsk bigger questions to spark curiosity:

  • Why do flies buzz?

  • Why are they important in nature?

  • What animals eat flies?

  • Why do flies have wings instead of walking everywhere?

🌿 Spring Nature Connection Spring brings warmer weather, blooming flowers, and lots of insect activity. You might notice:

  • More buzzing insects

  • Flies near gardens and flowers

  • Birds swooping down to catch insects

  • Increased activity after rain

Everything in nature is connected.

💛 A Note for Parents Nature learning doesn’t always come from “cute” bugs. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when kids explore creatures they might normally ignore. This activity is all about curiosity, observation, and helping children understand the small but important world around them.

Slow down, head outside, and explore together.
