Bug of the Week: Stick Bugs

This week, we're taking a closer look at one of nature's greatest masters of disguise... stick bugs!
Recently, our homeschool group had the opportunity to visit the University of Maryland's Insect Zoo, where we got to see stick bugs up close. These incredible insects are experts at camouflage and can be so well hidden that predators often mistake them for real twigs and branches.
Stick bugs are found in many parts of the world, especially in tropical and subtropical forests throughout Asia, Australia, Central America, and South America. They spend most of their lives blending in with the plants around them.
This week's activity is all about slowing down, observing nature, and learning how animals use special adaptations to survive.
This Week's Challenge: Nature Detectives
Head outside and see if you can find examples of camouflage in nature!
👀 Observe the Outdoors
Look in places like:
• Trees and bushes• Flower gardens• Forest trails• Parks and playgrounds• Tall grasses and shrubs
Encourage your child to look carefully. Sometimes the most amazing things are hiding in plain sight!
✏️ Look Closely & Ask Questions
Help your child think like a scientist:
• Why would a stick bug want to look like a stick?• What predators might be searching for insects?• How does camouflage help animals survive?• What other animals use camouflage?• Would it be easy to spot a stick bug in a tree?
🍃 What Do Stick Bugs Eat?
Stick bugs are herbivores, which means they eat plants. They enjoy:
• Leaves• Blackberry leaves• Oak leaves• Rose leaves• Other tree and shrub leaves
🦉 What Eats Stick Bugs?
Even with their amazing camouflage, stick bugs still have predators, including:
• Birds• Lizards• Frogs• Small mammals• Spiders
Their stick-like appearance helps them avoid becoming someone else's lunch!
🎨 Creative Extension
Choose one activity:
• Draw a stick bug hiding in a tree• Design your own camouflage insect• Create a "spot the stick bug" picture challenge• Build a stick bug using twigs, paper, or craft supplies
🧠 Think Like a Scientist
Ask bigger questions to spark curiosity:
• Why do some animals blend in while others have bright colors?• What would happen if stick bugs couldn't camouflage themselves?• How does an animal's habitat help it survive?• What other insects have unique survival adaptations?
🌿 Nature Connection
As summer continues, many insects are busy eating, growing, and avoiding predators. Every insect has an important role in the ecosystem, and stick bugs remind us that sometimes the best way to survive is to blend in.
💛 A Note for Parents
One of the most exciting parts of our visit to the University of Maryland's Insect Zoo was seeing stick bugs up close and learning about their incredible adaptations. Experiences like these help children connect classroom learning to the real world and encourage curiosity about the natural world around them.
Slow down, look closely, and see what nature might be hiding right in front of you.
