Starting the Year with Wonder: National Bird Day in Our Homeschool

Updated: Feb 18

We’re also fresh off the holiday break

And if you homeschool (or parent) at all, you know the holidays are beautiful but they’re a lot. The late nights, the excitement, the schedule changes, the extra noise, the emotions. Even good moments take energy. Coming out of that season, it takes time to decompress, reset, and gently find our rhythm again.

Bird watching has always been a quiet love of mine, and it felt like the perfect way to ease back in.

We live in a wooded area here in Maryland, and some of my favorite moments happen right at my window coffee in hand, watching birds move freely from tree to tree. There’s something grounding about it. Birds remind me to slow down, observe, and appreciate the details that are easy to miss when life feels loud.

So instead of jumping straight back into heavy lessons after the holidays, we’re starting the year with wonder.

Why National Bird Day Felt Right

National Bird Day is about more than birds it’s about awareness, observation, and respect for nature. For homeschool families, it’s also a reminder that learning doesn’t have to come rushing back all at once.

Sometimes learning looks like:

• Looking out the window

• Listening closely

• Asking questions

• Letting curiosity lead

Our Focus: Maryland’s State Bird

Since we live in Maryland, we’re diving into our state bird the Baltimore Oriole.

We’ll be learning:

• Where it lives

• What it eats

• Why it’s important to our state

• One fun or surprising fact

And of course there will be drawing and coloring, because creativity always has a place in learning here.

Introducing Our Bird Log

To make bird watching more interactive, we created a bird log to use throughout the week.

Each time we spot a bird, we’ll record:

• Date & time

• Where we saw it

• What it was doing

• Colors or markings

• Any questions we have

This simple log turns a calm moment into science, journaling, and mindfulness all without pressure.

Learning Can Be Gentle

Starting the year this way feels intentional. Gentle. Fun.

After the holidays, our nervous systems need a moment too. Homeschooling doesn’t have to snap back into full speed on day one. Sometimes the best lessons are the ones that give everyone permission to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy learning again.

Tomorrow, we’ll watch.

We’ll listen.

We’ll learn.

And that feels like the perfect way to begin.❤️
