Exploring the Journey from Farm to Table: Lessons in Simple Living for Kids

Updated: Jul 1

July invites us to slow down, step outside, and discover the true origins of our food. This month, we focus on the theme of Farm to Table and Simple Living, offering children a chance to learn by doing, exploring local farms, and understanding the hard work behind every meal. Instead of just reading about farming, kids will experience it firsthand, meeting farmers, observing animals, and tasting fresh produce. This hands-on approach helps children connect with nature and appreciate the value of simple living.

Understanding What Farm to Table Means

Farm to table is more than a phrase; it’s a journey that food takes from the soil to our plates. Have you ever wondered how a strawberry travels from a farm to your breakfast bowl? Or how milk arrives fresh in your fridge? This month, children will explore these questions by tracing the path food takes and learning about the people and animals involved.

Key questions to explore include:

  • Where does our food come from?

  • Why are farmers essential to our communities?

  • What does it take to grow fruits and vegetables?

  • How do farms care for their animals?

  • How can we support local farmers and eat more locally?

By answering these questions, children gain a deeper respect for food and the environment.

Learning Through Local Farm Visits

One of the best ways to understand farming is by experiencing it firsthand. This July, we'll be visiting a variety of farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania, each with its own story, traditions, and way of growing food. Along the way, we'll also learn from members of our own community who enjoy gardening at home.

Our adventures include:

  • Family-owned farms where traditions are passed down through generations

  • Black-owned farms that bring unique perspectives and farming practices

  • Farms growing a variety of fruits and vegetables

  • Livestock farms that teach us about caring for animals responsibly

  • Farmers markets where local produce is sold directly to the community

  • Community gardens that show how neighbors can grow food together

  • Friends' and family members' home gardens, where we'll learn about growing herbs, vegetables, flowers, and harvesting right from the backyard

Each visit is an opportunity for children to ask questions, make observations, and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who help bring food from the farm to our tables.

Experiencing Simple Living Inspired by Amish Traditions

A special part of July is Simple Living Week, inspired by the Amish way of life. The Amish community is known for its focus on craftsmanship, community, and living close to the land without modern distractions. During this month, We will visit Pennsylvania to experience:

  • Amish farming techniques that rely on horses and manual labor

  • Traditional crafts like woodworking and quilting

  • The importance of community support and shared work

  • How simple living fosters a strong connection to nature and each other

This experience helps children understand that living simply can bring joy, reduce waste, and build stronger communities.

Why Teaching Kids About Farm to Table Matters

Teaching children about farm to table and simple living builds awareness about where food comes from and encourages healthier eating habits. It also fosters respect for farmers and the environment. When kids see the effort behind growing food, they are more likely to appreciate meals and reduce waste.

Moreover, these lessons promote:

  • Curiosity and critical thinking through hands-on learning

  • Connection to local communities and support for small farmers

  • Understanding of sustainability and environmental care

  • Skills in gardening, cooking, and observation

For example, after visiting a farm, children might try growing their own herbs at home or help prepare a meal using fresh ingredients.

Practical Ways Families Can Embrace Farm to Table and Simple Living

Families can bring these lessons home with simple activities:

  • Visit local farmers markets regularly to buy fresh produce

  • Start a small garden with easy-to-grow vegetables or herbs

  • Cook meals together using seasonal ingredients

  • Reduce food waste by planning meals and composting scraps

  • Learn about different farming practices through books or documentaries

These small steps help children see the value of fresh, local food and the joy of simple living.
