How I Turn My Son’s Interests Into Real Learning (Without Forcing It)

If you asked me a few years ago what homeschooling would look like, I probably would’ve said lesson plans, schedules, and a lot of structure.
But in our home?It looks a little different.
It looks like following my son’s interests… and building learning around them.
It Started With Bugs…
My son has loved bugs for as long as I can remember.
Not just a little interest I’m talking stopping mid-walk, laying on the ground, watching ants for 10 minutes type of love 😂
And instead of rushing him or saying “okay that’s enough,”I made a decision:
👉 What if I used this instead of fighting it?
Learning Doesn’t Have to Start at the Table
So we built our Spring Bug Series around something he already loved.
So far we’ve explored:
Butterflies
Ants
Ladybugs
Caterpillars
But here’s the difference…
We didn’t just “learn about bugs.”
We:
Took the lessons outside
Used worksheets to track what we actually saw
Talked about their behavior in real time
Let curiosity lead the conversation
The Shift That Changed Everything
The moment I stopped trying to make learning look “traditional,” everything changed.
Instead of:
Forcing attention
Repeating directions
Dealing with frustration
I started seeing:
Focus
Excitement
Real engagement
Because it wasn’t random…
👉 It was something he already cared about.
What He’s Actually Learning (Without Realizing It)
Even though it feels like we’re just outside having fun, he’s learning:
Observation skills
Critical thinking
Science concepts (habitats, life cycles, ecosystems)
Patience and focus
And honestly? He remembers more this way than any worksheet at the table could teach.
We’re Building Toward Something Bigger
We even have an upcoming field trip to the University of Maryland Department of Entomology in June.
And this whole bug series?
It’s been the perfect warm-up.
He’s not walking in confused He’s walking in curious, confident, and excited.
For the Moms Who Feel Like They’re “Not Doing Enough
If you’ve ever felt like:
“Am I doing this right?”
“Should I be more structured?”
“Is this enough?”
Let me tell you something…
👉 Following your child’s interest is learning.
You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re building something that actually sticks.
🐞 Want to Try This With Your Kids?
You don’t need a full curriculum to start.
Just:
Pay attention to what your child loves
Build simple lessons around it
Take it outside when you can
And watch what happens.
👉 Join Our Bug of the Week
We’re continuing our Spring Bug Series with weekly lessons, activities, and printables designed to make learning feel natural and fun.
If your child loves bugs (or just being outside), come learn with us 🐞
